Colonel Beetroot of Beetroot Hall — original character artwork by Joy Laurey

Original hand-coloured character artwork by Joy Laurey for Colonel Beetroot of Beetroot Hall, dated October 1951 on the sheet. The finished central figure is shown in a belted green country suit with breeches and boots, against surrounding preliminary pencil studies. Notes on the reverse describe Colonel Beetroot as a country squire, modelled on Joy Laurey’s own grandfather: “rather fiery & short — but with a heart of gold”. Additional character and costume notes are written on the reverse.
