Hand-coloured Christmas card — Mr Turnip and Jingles

Handmade Christmas greetings card designed by Joy Laurey. The front was made using an ink stamp, then hand-coloured with watercolour by Joy herself. It shows Mr Turnip and Jingles beside a globe marked “The Studio, Tiptree, Essex”, with Christmas greetings to friends around the world. The inside and back are blank.

“Hello! I’m Mr Turnip” toilet-soap advertisements from Mickey Mouse Weekly

Two cut-out paper advertisements clipped from Mickey Mouse Weekly. Both carry the headline “Hello! I’m Mr Turnip” and promote a 5-inch Mr Turnip toilet-soap figure and its miniature television-set-style box. The copy describes Mr Turnip as having “come off the TV screen” and invites readers to ask for him at their chemist. The reverse sides retain unrelated Mickey Mouse Weekly comic-strip printing.

The printed programme is issued by Mr Alderman and Mrs Seymour Howard. An accompanying venue plan marks The Laurey Puppet Company’s performances in the Egyptian Hall, alongside other afternoon entertainments. Also present are a handwritten note relating to the party and a contemporary press cutting about a Mansion House children’s fancy-dress party.

Printed programme and invitation for the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress’s Children’s Party at Mansion House, London, held on Saturday 12 January 1952. The programme lists The Laurey Puppet Company in the Long Parlour, presenting “FANCY” with performances throughout the afternoon. Other entertainments included Punch and Judy, magic and ventriloquism, games, singing, dancing, conjuring and music by the Royal Marine Band of H.M.S. Pembroke. The programme is tied with its original red ribbon and is inscribed on the reverse to “Leslie Boyce, Lord Mayor, 1951–52.”

Children’s Party programme and floor plan — Mansion House, London

Fold-out programme and illustrated floor plan for a Children’s Party given by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Mr Alderman and Mrs Cuthbert Ackroyd, at the Mansion House, London, on Saturday 14 January 1956. The plan records attractions including appearances by the Laurey Company, Punch and Judy by A. R. Bullivant, ‘Lord Mayor’s Cat Horatio Paw’, and a ‘Jolly’ band from the Royal Marines School of Music. The reverse carries a handwritten note to Joy, signed by the Lady Mayoress.

Printed programme for the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress’s Children’s Party at the Mansion House on Saturday 13 May 1950. The Laurey Puppet Company appeared in the Long Parlour with “Snippets Half-Hour”, alongside Punch and Judy, magician and ventriloquist Allen Benbow with Stanley Stratton at the piano, music by the Band of the Welsh Guards, and singing by Muriel Jones’s Famous Welsh Singers. The programme includes a personal autograph inscription on the reverse.

In the Long Parlour, the Jonathan Laurie Marionette Company presented A Christmas Fantasia, including Way Down South, Hoodoo the Snake Charmer, The Enchanted Toyshop, Patchwork's Balancing Act, Dance of the Flying Boots, Spellbound, A Voice to Remember and Christmas 100 Years Ago. The programme also records Magical Fun With Uncle Jim, Punch and Judy in the Salon, dancing in the Egyptian Hall to the Royal Artillery Orchestra, and teas in the Old Ballroom.

Mary Hayes letter to Joy Laurey regarding a Mickey Mouse Weekly Jungle Club show

Typed letter from Mary Hayes to Joy Laurey, dated 15 May 1952. Hayes writes that Mr Taylor has told her Joy has agreed to put on another show for the “Jungle Chums” and asks to fix a definite date, suggesting the first half of July. The letter notes that 4.30 p.m. had been the best time of day the previous year and expresses hope that the children will enjoy the outing again. The original Mickey Mouse Weekly envelope is addressed to Miss Joy Laurey at York Gate Hall, Broadstairs, Kent, with that address crossed through and a handwritten forwarding address for The Puppet Studios, Tiptree, Essex.

Joy Laurey letter to Peter Hawkins mentioning The Flowerpot Men

Joy thanks Peter for his letter, discusses programme leaflets, publicity for a photograph, a ‘mushroom episode’, studio access, plans for a September visit, the forthcoming Whirligig Annual, and refers to ‘The Flowerpot Men’.

Gordon & Gotch news bulletin: Mr Turnip honoured at the B.I.F. on balloons

Two-page Gordon & Gotch Ltd. News & Information Division bulletin headed “MR. TURNIP IS HONOURED AT THE B.I.F. — ON BALLOONS”. It publicises Mr Turnip balloon merchandise at Grovewell Ltd. stand O.8 in the Empire Hall, Olympia, and announces appearances by Mr Turnip and Joy Laurey at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday 10 May and Wednesday 14 May. The second page gives a concise contemporary account of Mr Turnip’s creation for Whirligig and names his collaborators and vegetable companions.

Hawkins apologises for the delay in sending a promised display photograph; discusses recent television work on Louise Hutton’s Three Little Mushrooms, produced by David Boisseau, in which he manipulates and voices the Farmer, Donkey and Lob; and says he is due to make a trial film for Freda Lingstrom’s The Flower-pot Men.

Handwritten two-page personal letter from Joy Laurey to Mrs Peters, dated 20 November 1955 from Tiptree, Essex. Laurey thanks Mrs Peters for flattering comments published in the Friday evening Star newspaper concerning “Joy Laurey and me”, says how pleased she was to meet her, and invites Mrs Peters and her husband to visit Tiptree, “the land of strawberries”. The letter is signed in character as “Mr Turnip”, followed by a postscript from Joy recommending a visit when the strawberries are ripe.

The reception was hosted by the Minister of the Rumanian People's Republic and Madame P. Bălăceanu at London, on Friday 22 August 1958, from 7.30 to 9 p.m. The reverse carries a blind-embossed version of the crest printed on the front.

Archive grouping comprising an original posted envelope, a folded Christmas/New Year greeting card and a black-and-white photographic picture card/insert. The envelope is addressed to Joy Laurey at York Gate, England, from Marjorie Batchelder McPharlin at El Rancho de San Sebastian, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is postmarked Santa Fe, N. Mex., 26 December 1962 at 11 AM. The greeting card is inscribed “Greetings and all good wishes” and signed/dated “Marjorie B. McPharlin 1963”. The relationship between the separate scenic photographic piece and the greeting card remains to be confirmed.

Joachim Pillai O.M.I.” The reverse is printed with the title and publication credit.

Obituary/profile cutting for Ann Hogarth

Large trimmed printed obituary/profile cutting headed “ANN HOGARTH.” It includes a monochrome photograph of Ann Hogarth holding the control bar for several string puppets, including Muffin the Mule. The article recalls her role writing and operating for Muffin the Mule, her partnership with Jan Bussell and the Hogarth Puppets, international touring, RADA training, work in theatre and television, retirement in Devon, and the formation of the Hogarth Collection.

“Mr. Turnip Pays a Call” clipping from Mickey Mouse Weekly

Trimmed portrait-format magazine cutting headed “MR. TURNIP PAYS A CALL.” It reproduces a monochrome full-length photograph of Mr Turnip in formal dress, carrying a dark case marked “MR TURNIP” and holding an umbrella or cane. The accompanying first-person text introduces him as appearing on Whirligig, described as television’s most popular children’s programme, and says he will return the following week.

Picture postcard from Eva, Bucharest to Joy Laurey, 22 November 1961

Original used Romanian colour picture postcard. The front shows a broad public square with a fountain and an urban skyline; no printed picture title is visible, so the precise view is unconfirmed. The reverse is addressed to Miss Joy Laurey at The Puppet Studio, Tiptree, Essex, England, and carries the handwritten message “With love from Eva.” It was sent by air mail from Bucharest on 22 November 1961 and bears six Romanian stamps commemorating the 1960 International Festival of Puppet Theatres in Bucharest.

Puppet Centre Trust postcard from Eve to Joy Laurey: “Collection of Commissioned Puppets”

The reverse bears a handwritten message to “Dear Joy,” signed “Eve,” enclosing a catalogue and referring to an exhibition set up by Jane Phillips that originated from the Puppet Centre. The card is printed with Puppet Centre Trust credits for the “Collection of Commissioned Puppets, 1976.”

UNIMAP illustrated puppet-theatre art card

The front depicts a stylised woman holding two crossed bars or controls above a framed stage or room scene containing two puppet- or mask-like figures. A bold blue-and-black geometric pattern fills the background. The otherwise blank reverse carries the printed code “UNIMAP F 1964 WS 1564” and a blue-ink handwritten name/signature whose reading is uncertain.

UNIMA circular letter announcing Bulletin and Almanac, with mailing envelope

Typed English-language UNIMA circular, retained with its franked printed-matter envelope. The letter announces an Executive Committee decision, made at its third session in Sofia on 7–8 June, to publish two periodicals: UNIMA-BULLETIN, issued two to four times each year in five languages, and the annual UNIMA-ALMANAC. It names Henryk Jurkowski as proposed editor-in-chief for the almanac and gives UNIMA editorial and correspondence addresses in Prague and Warsaw. The envelope is addressed to Miss Joy Laurey at The Puppet Studio, Tiptree, Essex, England, and bears the UNIMA logo, a Prague return address and a Czechoslovak postal meter.

Two UNIMA “Budapest 1966” graphic cards, signed Jan Malík, with mailing envelope

Each card has a bold abstract black/brown and blue/purple design incorporating the words/numerals “1966” and “BUDAPEST”, and is signed in blue ink with a name that appears to read “Jan Malík”. The envelope is addressed to “THE LAUREY PUPPET COMPANY (Miss Joy LAUREY) / The Puppet Studio / TIPTREE, Essex / ENGLAND” and carries the UNIMA logo, the French title “UNION INTERNATIONALE DES MARIONNETTES”, Prague return details and a Czechoslovak postal meter.

UNIMA 25th-anniversary congratulatory letter to The Laurey Puppet Company

Original two-page typed UNIMA letter on headed paper, addressed to The Laurey Puppet Company (Miss Joy Laurey) at The Puppet Studio, Tiptree, Essex. Dated Prague, 15 August 1967, it congratulates the company on its 25th anniversary, acknowledges its contribution to theatre culture and international puppetry, and asks for the exact day, month and year of its first opening performance. The letter is signed in blue ink by Prof. Dr. Jan Malík, Secretary-General of UNIMA, and bears a circular UNIMA stamp.

New Year pop-up card of Moscow Metro Kropotkinskaya from Olga and Sergei Obraztsov, with Soviet airmail envelope

A Soviet colour paper-construction New Year card designed to stand upright in three dimensions. It depicts the entrance/architectural setting of Moscow Metro Kropotkinskaya, with the red metro “M” and cut-out foreground figures. The lower panel bears a blue handwritten greeting from Olga and Sergei Obraztsov. Retained with a used airmail envelope addressed to Joy Laurey at The Puppet Studio, Tiptree, Essex, England, bearing Soviet stamps and postal markings.

“The Great Flood” — original Mr Turnip story typescript (nine pages)

Nine-page original typescript entitled “The Great Flood”. The opening page places Mr Turnip in a little house in a field during a drought, watering flowers before Colonel Beetroot calls him in for tea. The complete story was subsequently included in the Joy Laurey Archive publication “Mr Turnip: The Missing Stories”, alongside two other recovered stories.

Pair of Mr Turnip textile relief panels

Pair of small, irregular rectangles of coarse natural-fibre textile, each bearing a raised soft relief portrait of Mr Turnip. The reliefs show his rounded face, prominent round eyes, bulbous nose, ears, small top projection and bow tie/collar. Both front and reverse surfaces have been photographed. They appear to be matched fabric-formed relief panels or prototype components; the exact making process, function and maker remain unconfirmed.

The motifs include Mr Turnip standing, reclining in bed, and in other activity poses, each labelled “Mr Turnip”. Stuart reports that it may be a retained sample or offcut from Mr Turnip pyjamas sold by Marks & Spencer; this commercial link is not yet confirmed.

Mr Turnip printed brushed-cotton fabric swatch — blue-print variant

Irregular near-square piece of cream brushed cotton printed with a repeat pattern of colour Mr Turnip illustrations and small blue and green stars. Motifs include Mr Turnip standing in a blue jacket and red trousers, standing in a red jacket and blue trousers, reclining in bed, and walking with a candle. Each is captioned “Mr Turnip”. The reverse shows a paler strike-through of the print. This appears related to, but is physically distinct from, JLA-0062.

Tandarica printed cotton textile panel

Cream cotton textile panel printed in four bold, coloured quadrants. The design includes a green profile figure, a blue vehicle with two red hearts, a yellow cheese-like wheeled figure and a red smiling character. “TANDARICA” is repeated around the quadrants in contrasting colours.

Mr Turnip articulated card puppet

The orange head has green ear-like leaves and a small green turnip shoot. Articulated at both shoulders and the waist with brown eyelets. The Pied Piper — Connaught Theatre programme

Printed programme for C.T. Productions Ltd.’s new musical The Pied Piper at the Connaught Theatre, Worthing, for Christmas 1958. The cover lists the principal cast and production team. An interior profile headed “Joy Laurey” states that puppet characters for Mariana’s Puppet Show were specially created for the production by television puppeteer Joy Laurey; it refers to Mr Turnip, the BBC Magazine Programme Whirligig, and the television puppet-film series The Adventures of Twizzle and Torchy.

BBC Television Service letter from Michael Westmore to Joy Laurey

Single-page handwritten letter dated 8 June 1952, addressed “Dear Joy,” on BBC Television Service, Lime Grove Studios letterhead. Michael Westmore writes, “Another series has come and gone,” thanks Joy for her “fine work,” hopes that her exertion on Saturdays did not cause too much discomfort, and sends good wishes for success in the future. The completed series is not named in the letter.

Christmas and New Year card from Mary Norton to Joy Laurey

The card is addressed to “Mrs Joy Laurey” and signed by Mary Norton, author of The Borrowers. Norton thanks Joy for her kind letter and refers to an animator being hired in America, where an unidentified film is being put together.

Beresford writes that she is enclosing a contract from the B.B.C. for Joy to sign and return directly. The printed stationery identifies her as “solely representing JOY LAUREY — THE GIRL WHO PULLS THE STRINGS” and incorporates a small Mr Turnip illustration plus a scroll of named puppet characters and performance work. The referenced contract is not present in the supplied views.

The front carries a monochrome portrait, the caption “Digging for Coal?”, his London contact address and telephone number; the reverse is printed with a full calendar for 1945. A handwritten recipient name is present on the front but is not fully legible.

F. C. A. McCulloch visiting card — Joy Laurey’s grandfather

Cream engraved visiting card for F. C. A. McCulloch, printed with his affiliation to the 3rd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, and the address New Barracks, Gosport, Hants. The archive identifies McCulloch as Joy Laurey’s grandfather and records the family attribution that he inspired the Colonel Beetroot character.

E.N.S.A. tour diary of The Jonathan Laurey Marionette Co. — October 1942

Thirteen handwritten lined-paper pages headed “The Jonathan Laurey Marionette Co. E.N.S.A. Tour.” The diary begins on 14 October 1942 with a ‘Mileometer’ reading of 01584 and records driving directions, performances, meals, overnight stops and touring incidents. Four subsequently photographed pages continue the record through 27–28 October, describing disrupted road travel, vehicle trouble and repairs, assistance from other travellers, overnight stops and further touring journeys. Earlier pages trace London, Kent and Sussex, including Tower Bridge, Elephant & Castle, Bromley, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Eastbourne.

A handwritten note in blue ink sends good wishes to the recipient and family for Christmas and the New Year, and is signed “from Peter.”
