Original hand-coloured character artwork by Joy Laurey for Sarah Swede. The design includes costume and colour studies, the handwritten line “My-my-Mr. Turnip — what will these twins get up to next!”, and notes describing Sarah as a comfortable country type, somewhat reminiscent of Peggotty in David Copperfield. A further character note explains that she talks in rounded country tones, bustles about, does Mr. Turnip’s shopping and attends to other things needing a woman’s care.
