​Drawing and painting were central to Joy Laurey's creative life. Her skill as an artist can be seen not only in her finished watercolours, but also in the lively sketches, character studies and working drawings she produced throughout her career.
 
Joy drew constantly. Some pictures were made as finished works; others helped her think through the shape, costume, expression or movement of a puppet. Her drawings of Mr Turnip and his friends capture the same warmth and humour that audiences recognised on screen.
 
The surviving artwork also reaches well beyond television. It includes landscapes, observations from everyday life, story ideas and designs for projects that were never fully realised. Together, these works reveal the imagination behind the puppets and show how closely Joy's art and performance were connected.
 
The archive is preserving and cataloguing this material so that Joy can be recognised not only as a puppeteer, but as the accomplished artist at the heart of everything she created.
